DescriptionGeneral Statement of Duties and Distinguishing Features of ClassThis member of the professional staff will be primarily responsible for the development, planning, execution and evaluation of the department's Fitness & Health programming at Mason Community Center.
Examples of this work includes supervising group exercise programming, general health & wellness programming, personal training, fitness floor maintenance and fitness equipment purchasing.
Work is performed under the direction of the Recreation Manager.
Along with the primary responsibilities, the Program Supervisor is expected to embrace the City's vision for Building a Culture of Wellness within the community and the City's four key values of Cooperation, Collaboration, Communication and Compassion.
City employees are expected to execute the position's primary responsibilities, cross train with other Department initiatives as well as City-wide initiatives.
The Program Supervisor assignments will vary based upon the Department and community need.
Other programming areas the Program Supervisor will need to learn include Aquatics, Enrichment, Sports, Programs & Events and Membership Services.
There are 6 Program Supervisor positions within the Department, each assigned primary responsibilities.
The Program Supervisors work together as a team to execute programming and City-wide initiatives include assisting as needed with events like Red, Rhythm and Boom, Heritage Festival and well as other City Department needs during their peak times.
Examples of this work include opening tax mail, providing support for City services like snow & brush removal and shadowing other Departments to understand their role in the organization and how each Department works together to meet City needs.
The Mason Community Center is owned and operated by the City of Mason.
The Mason Community Center operates as a business.
Programs offered at the facility are expected to generate revenue, build partnerships with City of Mason businesses & organizations and build value in the Premier membership.
Program Supervisors are responsible for assuring programs offered meet these requirements.
The nature of this position requires the incumbent to exercise considerable independent judgment and discretion in supervising all aspects, resources, and personnel related to the delivery of recreation and leisure programs and services.
The employee assumes responsibility for assigned details of coordinating, scheduling and supervising programs.
Performs studies and research and determines the leisure needs of the community and plans programs accordingly.
Supervises part-time, seasonal and contractual staff and volunteers.
Work is reviewed through written and verbal communications, reports, and annual performance appraisals.
Assures that assigned programs and facilities are adequately planned for the maximum safety, comfort and benefit of the community.
Examples of Work (Illustrative Only) Responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned programs and services offered to the community; Assists in the coordination of special events, including, but not limited to scheduling, planning, publicizing, sponsorships and supervising; Performs various research on recreation topics, personnel, programming, fee structures, etc.
; Directly supervises paid and volunteer staff of assigned area; Inspects assigned areas for maintenance and repair, cleanliness, safety and efficiency of operations; Maintains complete and accurate personnel, safety and program records; Develops and maintains cooperative working relations with community service agencies and organizations whose activities/services can assist the department in carrying-out its' mission; Under the guidance of Human Resources, interviews, trains, schedules, supervises and evaluates appropriate staff; In cooperation with the Recreation Manager or his/her designee, coordinates the scheduling of facilities for instructional and drop-in recreational programs; Assists with budgeting functions for recreation programs and services; Assists in the design and development of promotional materials; Responds to inquiries, complaints and requests for information from residents; Organizes and conducts orientation and in-service training for staff and volunteers; Assesses recreation needs of the community and develops programs in accordance with those needs; Monitors registration and attendance of classes and programs, assesses feasibility and public interest and takes appropriate action in a timely manner; Prepares and submits program reports, as appropriate or assigned; Performs related work and special projects as needed; Makes presentations and speeches at meetings and other community events; Performs routine office, administrative functions and special projects as needed; Participates in external and internal committees as needed; Develop competency in the City's RecTrac computer software application and with various other computer software applications; Acts as Manager on Duty for the facility when required; Other assigned duties.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
The following is preferred.
Supervisory experience in combination with the ability to work effectively with employees and co-workers; Experience managing fitness facilities and working with fitness and health programs highly desirable; Thorough knowledge of modern principles, methods, practices of public programs management, with an emphasis in fitness and health; Thorough understanding of expenditure and budgetary processes; Thorough knowledge and skills to provide a wide variety of activities that meet participant needs and interests; and Workable knowledge of public relations, marketing and promotional skills.
Dependable, flexible and able and willing to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required; Communicate professionally in-person, in writing, and other mediums; and Proficient on computers and software programs.
I understand this position is a position at will, and nothing in this job description and no oral statements made to me in connection with this job description can be construed as a contract of employmentRequirementsMinimum Education, Experience, and Requirements Possession of a bachelor's degree in exercise physiology, recreation education, physical education, sports management or related field; or any equivalent combination of accepted education and experience; Experience in leading and supervising employees; Direct program leadership or coordination experience with American Council on Exercise, Aerobics and Fitness Association of America, American College of Sports Medicine (or other nationally recognized curriculum) programs highly desired; Must possess or be able to obtain and retain basic-level CPR and first aid certifications.
Physical Requirements:
Able to sit for extended periods of time working on keyboarding activities, entering data, creating contracts, etc.

) and locale for brief to extended periods of time; Able to perform on-site program instruction and leadership at varying sites; Ability to work in adverse environmental conditions (i.
